As some of you may know I'm getting prepared for Halloween. No, no costume for me, but for my kids.
When I was looking for some inspiration on internet, I found lots of vintage pictures of costumes. I'm not sure if they were used for Halloween actually, or just for other events and occasions, but I thought it was fun to show those to all who might be interested.
I liked the Victorian bat costumes. Thinking of Victorian women dressed up like bats is somehow funny. And, very interesting, I found only women in bat costumes.

Some costumes maybe were intended to be spooky, and some funny, but today a few of the funny ones look somewhat scary. I guess we are just not used anymore to certain types of disguises, costumes, masked, and they honestly make me feel uncomfortable.
Children also dressed up. Somehow they looked so cute as if it was today, but some pictures really look odd.
Women as witches are a standard throughout all decades.
How about some less decent costumes?
Then there are those dupe-nice pin-up witches, cats and bats.
Ah, and I LOVE the catalogues and patterns for costumes! How much vintage inspiration!
So, do you dress up for Halloween? If so, where do you get your inspiration from? What's your favorite costume?
Mine? I guess this one… I love black, I love the dress, the hat, the plume broom - gorgeous!
I love Halloween, my home is already dressed in black&orange! Of course I´ll dress up for my favorite holiday :-)

DeleteHalloween is not really celebrated in Switzerland, although people use pumpkins for autumn decorations. I always plan to make something special, but usually I run out of time and prepare just a nice pumpkin soup or a pie (or both). And of course I alway carve a pumpkin lantern in a special way.
Currently I'm sewing the costumes for my kids for their first Halloween, so maybe you come back for my next post! :-)

Deleteich selbst habe es ja gar nicht mit dem verkleiden und wenn ich muss nehme ich es zu ernst (kostümbild studiert, da kann man halt nicht mal so 'hahaha' ein kostüm kreieren, da denke ich ein halbes jahr über jeden fuddel nach - auch wenn ich schon lang nicht merh in dem bereich arbeite ...)
ReplyDeleteAber du hast hir einige großartige bilder gefunden. die victorian lady bats sind wundervoll und die horde von den catsuit tragenden kids mit den riesen ohren ...herrjeh! die muss ich mir gleich alle nochmal angucken. toll.
Ich selbst würde mich auch nicht bedingungslos verkleiden, da bin ich wählerisch (entweder etwas Schottisches oder die klassische Hexe). Und ich kann Dir nachfühlen: ich habe Geschichte studiert und nerve mich über pseudohistorische Kostüme aus Polyester und dergleichen… Faszinierend an alten Fotos von Kostümen ist, dass unser "Empfinden" was Lustig oder Gruselig ist sich sehr verändert hat und wohl auch "geschönt" wurde. Die viktorianischen Fledermaus-Damen find eich persönlich auch toll - angesichts der Ära, aus der diese Kostüme stammen finde ich es fantastisch!
