Sew What You Got - Sewing Challenge

Each year I have the same resolution - sew more, sew from what I got (patterns, materials) to reduce my stash. Currently, sewing is almost impossible for me, as I have no sewing room. I had one. Now it's stuffed with boxes and clutter I don't know where to put, as I was supposed to move downstairs into the basement. However, my husband was so busy with his work that he was not able to prepare the basement. So I'm caught between two stools, and the unavoidable projects are made on our dining table.

But I really need more clothing. Less fancy dresses, but practical ones for everyday wear. (Saying this, I have to laugh. Wearing a dress in my village causes always comments like "Are you going to a special event?") Basics like jumpers that I can wear with trousers. And trousers. Especially now that we have, after many years of warm winters, freezing temperatures ands now again, I realized how little separates I have that I can wear when I'm outdoors.

Ich habe derzeit kein Nähzimmer mehr. Mein Kram ist zum grossen Teil verpackt, aber mein neues Näh-Verlies noch nicht bezugsbereit, und so entstehen die unvermeidlichen Projekte derzeit an unserm Esstisch. Aber ich brauch einfach endlich mehr Sachen zum Anziehen, Praktisches zum Kombinieren, und nicht wieder ausgefallene Kleider, die für meine Mitmenschen danach aussehen, als würde ich an einen speziellen Anlass gehen.

I love sewing challenges. Especially when there's no time limit, but still, a tiny bit of pressure is always good for me. The projects that others finish are the best motivation to compete and complete. And this one is wonderful, #sewwhatyougot, as it also helps to downsize my stash. Being in the middle of a move, I always wonder how I ended up with THAT MUCH material. Years of being crafty I guess. Being a hoarder collector of beautiful supplies. The advantage is, I can use so many fabulous materials and patterns I have since years!

Ich hab zuviel Material! Enorm, was sich in all den Jahren angesammelt hat! Deshalb dient meine aktuelle "Challenge" dazu, den Stoffvorrat abzubauen und eine Vielzahl jener Muster zu benutzen, die sich schon lange in meiner Sammlung tummeln.

So, let's start! First of all, I want at least two wrap dresses for the cold season. I have a forest green ponte de roma knit that I want to try on a vintage pattern, even though the pattern requires wovens. (I have seen very inspiring vintage dresses from knit fabrics here and here.) So I combine the knit fabric and the wrap style in my first project, and I'll make anther war dress from another material.

Mein erstes Projekt ist schon bald fertig. Diesen Romanit wollte ich schon lange verarbeiten, und es wird ein hoffentlich bequemes Wickelkleid geben. Oft habe ich mich gefragt, wie dieser oder jener Schnitt aus einem Jersey gefertigt aussehen würde. Nun probiere ich es aus, nicht zuletzt dank dieser beiden Posts hier und hier.

Project 1!

I would not be me if I didn't have already some ideas for dresses in my mind. Yes, I said less dresses, but I have so many fantastic patterns, and nice materials, it would be a sin!
I gave this pattern to a friend, but asked her if I could make a copy for my own use. It's a Swiss pattern! And the shirred parts are just made by sewing rows with elastic thread.

Ihr merkt - also doch Kleider. Es geht einfach nicht ohne, ich hab doch so viele tolle Schnitte! Diesen Schnitt hier will ich unbedingt nachnähen. Ein Schweizer! Ich habe ihn einer Freundin geschenkt und durfte ihn abpausen. Die gesmokten Partien sind einfach mit Elastikfaden eingereiht. Das kenne ich von Nähprojekten für meine Tochter, und ist ganz leicht zu machen.

This is the fabric I plan to use! It's a 1940s rayon crepe, and I feel a bit nervous about cutting the pieces, as its rather slinky. Look at the print - Asian people, what looks like pagodas, too cute! I even have another piece of it in a different colour. This will make the most comfortable summer dress!

Und das ist der Stoff dazu. Ein Viscose-Crêpe aus den 40ern. Er macht mich schon jetzt nervös, den schon beim Zusammenfalten  rutscht er in alle Richtungen weg. Aber seht Euch den Print an - ist der nicht sensationell. Und das Beste: Ich hab den Stoff gleich in zwei Farben. Das war ein absoluter Glücksfund.

And then there's this one. We thought we would attend to a wedding last year, but then we didn't. I had already chosen this lovely koi fabric for one of the following patterns. But never managed to start. Now, new year, new luck!

Dann dieses Projekt. Ja, noch ein Kleid. Aber ich hatte den Stoff letztes Jahr extra für eine Hochzeitsfeier gekauft, kam aber nie dazu, das Kleid zu nähen. Nun sollen die schönen blauen Kois in eins der Kleider verwandelt werden.

Talking of dresses, I also need more slips. A friend of mine recently sent me a copy for a wrap slip I want to try. You never can have enough things to wear underneath!

Wenn man Kleider trägt, braucht man auch Unterwäsche. Eine Bekannte hat mir netterweise einen Wickel-Unterrock kopiert, den ich jetzt endlich nähen möchte.

I mentioned I need some jumpers. Basically, I can knit, but I'm very slow. So I will have to sew my jumpers. I have recently bought some warm knit fabrics for this purpose.

Und wie gesagt, ideal zum Kombinieren für den Alltag wären Pullis und Shirts. Ich könnte zwar stricken, bin aber so langsam, dass ich meine Pullis wohl besser aus Strickstoff nähen werde.

In the meantime, it will certainly soon be spring. And in spring, there's a lot of outdoor work for me, so some trousers or even a pair of dungarees would be handy. And what about a cool cropped jacket for the cooler spring and summer days? This one could be made from a sturdy, yet not too heavy woven material, I have plenty of this kind in my stash!

Wenn es Frühling wird, werde ich auch wieder vermehrt draussen anzutreffen sein. Eine leichtere Jacke, passend zur Highways-Jeans wäre da prima.

Getting older, I feel like I should wear pajamas and robes again. I realised that especially robes are very useful in the morning while I help the kids to get ready for school. They are decent. I don't like to open the door to the postman in a worn-out t-shirt and joggers. I'm not yet sure weather it's going to be a 50s or 40s pattern (why not both?). And isn't it lovelier to go to bed in a cute pajama or nightgown? I'm going to sleep twice as well!

Ich werde ja auch älter, und ich denke öfters drüber nach, wieder vermehrt Pyjamas oder Nachthemden und drüber einen Hausmantel zu tragen. Da ist man auch morgen, wenn man die Kinder für die Schule vorbereitet, gleich besser angezogen. Ist ja auch unschön, wenn man dem Postboten in einem ausgeleierten Shirt und Trainerhose öffnet.

My robe will be made from this amazing cotton sateen I bought some time ago. A bit heavier, it will make a wonderful staple for the cooler days.

Last year I was lucky to find feedsacks with prints that are so totally up my alley. Mexico and Venice! As these come only in smaller pieces, I first had to find suitable patterns, so these will be some of my projects as well. Perfect for summer!

Letztes Jahr hatte ich zugegeben grosses Glück, da ich ein paar Feedsacks gefunden habe, die genau mein Geschmack waren! Mexico und Venedig! Da diese Stücke ja immer sehr klein sind, habe ich auch lange nach passenden Schnitten suchen müssen, aber diese Blusen werden für den Sommer dann genau richtig sein!

Seeing that winter this year is rather cold I had planned to finally sew a lined coat after one of my many vintage patterns. But I guess it would be better to start that one in autumn, so it would be (hopefully) ready for next winter. After my last project I feel quite confident I could do that. I have tons of heavy woolen fabric in my stash, I just need to pick a pattern.

I guess, I will end up with more than the required 8 projects, but I'm already so much looking forward to seeing what all the other ladies will sew. I will not have to fight with timelines, but still, a tiny bit of pressure to show your progresses and your finished garments is perfect for me.

Eigentlich wollte ich, vor allem weil diese Winter doch sehr kalt war bis anhin, endlich einen so richtig tollen Wintermantel nähen. Aber dieses Projekt wird dann eher für den Herbst sein, damit dann der Mantel auch wirklich rechtzeitig zum Beginn der kalten Jahreszeit einsatzbereit ist - hoffentlich.

Ich denke, zuletzt werden es sicher mehr als 8 Projekte sein, und ich freu mich schon sehr zu sehen was die anderen Damen nähen werden. 

1940s Plaid Jacket

Last autumn I was in desperate need for an autumnal everyday jacket. My mom had given me a wonderful double faced woolen material that had been in her stash since I can remember, and she told me it was probably from the early 70s. Perfect for my project! So I was looking for a pattern, not sure if I should try another one of my Lutterloh designs, or buy another vintage pattern. But then a very kind lady sent me a copy of a simple, yet absolutely gorgeous jacket that was exactly what I was looking for. I was eager to start immediately. Autumn in full swing, and me in need for a jacket. However, as usual, life came in between, and I got very sick, then the kids, and winter came, and the cut jacket pieces vanished in a bag and then in a pile of UFOs (unfinished objects).

Recently I decided that before starting anything new, I would first finish an UFO. So this time it was the jacket's turn.

Letzten Herbst hätte ich dringend eine herbstliche Jacke für den Alltag gebraucht. Meine Mutter hatte mir einen tollen Stoff geschenkt den sie schon ewig hatte, seit ich denken kann. Perfekt für mein Projekt! Ich brauchte nur noch einen Schnitt, unsicher, ob ich mich an einem Lutterloh-Design versuchen sollte oder etwas Passendes kaufen. Eine gute Fee hat mir dann in liebevoller Arbeit (danke liebe Susanne) einen originalen Schnitt kopiert, schlicht und doch fabelhaft und genau was ich wollte. Ich legte auch gleich los, denn es war Herbst und ich fror. Jedoch wie so oft kam das richtige Leben meinen Nähplänen in die Quere. Ich wurde ziemlich krank, dann die Kinder, und dann war Winter und die zugeschnittenen Teile wanderten in meinen UFO-Stapel. (UFOs sind unfertige Objekte.)

Kürzlich beschloss ich, bevor etwas Neues angefangen würde, sollte ein UFO fertig werden. Und so kam die Jacke endlich an die Reihe.

Unfortunately, the material was not that easy to sew as I had imagined. The double-layered material was too thick for certain parts, and even though double faced fabrics are intended to make garments without a lining, it would have been too complicated to work them in the proper way (so that the seams are hidden between the two layers). Therefore I still had to cut a front facing, and the seams are visible, but I don't mind, as they're well done and tidy. In the end, I had to fiddle around cut very carefully to have all the pieces needed for the jacket I wanted to sew, which meant: including a belt and - yes! - pockets!

Somehow I managed - but it really was a fight. For some parts I had to take the two fabric layers apart, which was very time-consuming, as they are connected with threads that had to be undone. Such a fiddly work. And I had tiny scraps of thread everywhere! But it was totally worth it.

Leider war das Material nicht so leicht zu verarbeiten wie ich gedacht hatte. Das "Double-Face"-Material war für gewisse Teile einfach zu dick (zB den Kragen mit Belag), und obwohl bei einem Stoff dieser Art die eine Seite als Futter dienen sollte, wäre es für gewisse Nähe zu umständlich gewesen, diese fachgerecht zu verarbeiten (nämlich so, dass die Säume zwischen die zwei an den Kanten geöffneten Stofflagen liegen). So musste ich dennoch einen Belag für die Vorderseite schneiden, und die Nähte innen sind sichtbar, aber da sie sauber verarbeitet sind stört es mich nicht. Zuletzt musste ich jedoch ziemlich wursteln sparsam zuschneiden, damit der Stoff für alles reicht, sprich: auch für einen Gurt und - jaaa! - Taschen!

Irgendwie hat es geklappt - aber es war ein Kampf. Für gewisse Teile musste die die beiden Stoffschichten trennen, was mühsam war, da sie mit vielen eingezogenen Fäden miteinander verbunden waren und dann in frimeliger Arbeit wieder von mir getrennt werden mussten. Ich hatte überall unzählige Fadenschnipselchen. Aber es hat sich gelohnt.

For the first time I tried bound button-holes. Yes, after more than 20 years of serious sewing I finally found the courage to try them, and I don't regret it. I made some test samples to play around with two techniques and with colour options, in the end I went for the buttonholes bound with fabric strips I made in the green fabric of the inside. I think the solid colour "calms down" the business of the plaid. As do the collar and the pocket flaps.
And yes, there are shoulder pads. Not as big as the pattern requires, but they are definitely necessary on this design.

Zum ersten Mal habe ich mich an verstärkten Knopflöchern versucht. Genau, nach über 20 Jahren seriösen Nähens habe ich den Mut dazu aufgebracht (abgesehen von einem nicht erwähnenswerten missratenen Versuch an einem Rock), und ich bereue es nicht. Ich hatte dazu einige Tests genäht, um mit Techniken und Farben zu spielen, und zuletzt gab es dann die Version mit zwei Paspelstreifen im Grün der Innenseite. Die uni Farbe beruhigt ein wenig das Karomuster, ebenso wie beim Kragen und den Taschenpatten.
Und ja, es hat auch Schulterpolster. drin Nicht so grosse wie im Muster vorgesehen, aber sie sind definitiv notwendig bei diesem Schnitt.

For once I had absolutely no matching buttons at home. Would you believe? I have two huge boxes stuffed with buttons, new and vintage ones, but none would match. So on one of our very rare trips to the city I bought some (my husband help me choosing them, and I'm very happy with our choice). I also cut a belt from the remaining scraps, and I had a matching green vintage buckle, but the belt has to be sewn yet.

Für einmal hatte ich keinen passenden Knopf in meinem Vorrat. Ist das zu glauben? Zwei riesige Kisten voller Knöpfe, alte und neue, und keiner passt. Bei einem unserer sehr spärlichen Ausflüge in die Stadt habe ich welche gekauft (mein Mann hat bei der Wahl geholfen, und ich bin sehr zufrieden damit). Ich habe aus einem Rest noch einen Gurt ausgeschnitten, der dann eine grüne Vintage-Schnalle bekommt, aber er ist noch nicht fertig.

The first time I wore the jacket was when we went to see my parents-in-law. A young lady stopped me on the street and wanted to know where I had the jacket from, because she thought it was gorgeous. She couldn't believe it when I told her I had made it - and she obviously was disappointed. I felt quite chuffed, as usually people stare at me, or grin, or laugh at me, as I look and dress different from from the crowd. So for once it was different.

Als ich die Jacke vor ein paar Tagen zum ersten Mal trug, bei einem Ausflug zu meinen Schwiegereltern, sprach mich eine jüngere Frau auf der Strasse an und wollte wissen, woher ich diese tolle Jacke hätte. Sie konnte kaum glauben, dass ich sie selbst gemacht habe, und war etwas enttäuscht. Mir hat das geschmeichelt, denn sonst gaffen die Leute ja meist oder grinsen doof, weil ich mich anders als die Masse kleide. Für einmal war es anders, das hat mich gefreut.

I also wore the jacket on a trip to the mountains yesterday. It was the last holiday weekend of our kids, and the weather forecast promised a sunny day in the Alps. We drove to the Lauterbrunnental in  Canton Berne, where I come from from my mother's side. This place with its many waterfalls once was a favorite destination for British tourist, and it's said to have been the inspiration for J. R. R. Tolkien's Rivendell. We hiked along the entire valley and then we took several cableways to the very top, the Schilthorn. (We had coupons for a super-special offer that cost us a ridiculous fraction of the normal fee, which is, in my humble opinion, exorbitant.) This place once was a filming location for one of the Bond movies (the one with the infamous George Lazenby). Sorry, honestly, I don't give a damn for James Bond movies, so I could have renounced to the movie stuff that was on exposition up there, but - the view, the weather, the mountains, all was simply breathtakingly beautiful. We had the most splendid sunshine, it was freezing cold (it was below zero), but my double-layered wool jacket kept me cozy and warm. I couldn't be happier with it, it's certainly more than an autumn garment, even though the colours matched the autumn trees so perfectly.

Ich trug das gute Stück auch auf unserem Ausflug in die Berge gestern. Es war das letzte Ferienwochenende unserer Kinder, und das Wetter versprach, in den Alpen ganz fantastisch zu sein. Wir fuhren ins Lauterbrunnental im Kanton Bern, wo ich mütterlicherseits herkomme. Dieser Platz mit den zahlreichen Wasserfällen war einst bei britischen Touristen sehr beliebt und soll auch die Inspiration für J. R. R. Tolkien gewesen sein, als er Rivendell (Bruchsal) in seiner Ring-Trilogie beschrieb. Wir wanderten durch das ganze Tal und fuhren dann mit etlichen Bergbahnen ganz hinauf zum Schilthorn. (Wir hatten Ermässignungsgutscheine und fuhren für einen lächerlichen Bruchteil des sonst üblichen Preises, der meines Erachtens masslos überteuert ist.) Dieser Ort war einst Filmlocation für einen James-Bond-Film (jener mit dem berüchtigten George Lazenby). Eigentlich habe ich mit Bond-Filmen nicht so viel am Hut, weshalb mir der ganze Bond-Kram der ausgestellt war ebensogut hätte gestohlen bleiben können, doch - die Aussicht, das Wetter, die Berge, das alles war atemberaubend schön und einfach nur herrlich. Wir hatten den wunderbarsten Sonnenschein, es war saukalt (im Minusbereich), aber meine doppelschichtige Wolljacke hielt mich warm und behaglich. Ich könnte nicht glücklicher sein, und es ist deshalb sicher mehr als nur eine herbstliche Übergangsjacke, die ist auch wintertauglich. Doch farblich hat sie zu den Bäumen ganz prima gepasst.

It's a bit unusual to see people wearing plaid jackets or even coats nowadays, especially in my country, but I imagine it was common in earlier decades. (My stress comment: "Oh, you made a lumberjack jacket.") Plaid is regarded as something rustic, and I all too often realise people don't see the beauty of such fabrics (I'm an avid tartan lover). I had to overcome a certain inhibition for the first outing, as I knew I was going to stand out of the crowd. As I'm planning to make another plaid garment very soon, I was trying to find some fellow plaid wearers from earlier times - look at all the beauties!

Heute ist es ja ein bisschen ungewohnt, karierte Jacken oder gar Mäntel zu sehen, besonders in meiner Gegend. (Kommentar meiner Schwester: "Oh, eine Holzfällerjacke.) Früher war das anders, heute gilt Karo eher rustikal, und immer wieder stelle ich fest, dass die Leute beispielsweise  mit der Schönheit schottischer Tartans, die ich innig liebe, nichts anfangen können. Ich musste dann auch etwas Mut aufbringen, weil man damit ja wirklich aus der Masse heraussticht. Weil ich noch etliche karierte Stoffe zu verarbeiten habe, wollte ich dann auch gerne schauen, ob es alte Fotos mit Karokleidung gibt - und schaut mal die tollen Sachen!

The last picture is very special. It's from a fellow FB member, I guess it's the lady's mother-in-law, and look at the fabulous coat she's wearing! So elegant - it makes me want to sit down and sew a plaid coat with a fur collar. I have to drool over this picture again and again. It's the epitome of a cozy, unique and sporty, yet elegant coat.

Das letzte Bild ist etwas ganz Besonderes. Es ist die Schwiegermutter einer Bekannten, die ich auf FB kennengelernt habe, und schaut mal den tollen Mantel den sie trägt. Der ist so schön, auch der Pelzkragen dazu, und ich werde nicht müde, das Bild zu bewundern. Für mich der Inbegriff eines kuscheligen, einmaligen und sportlichen, aber zugleich eleganten Mantels.

1950s Ballet Shoes Dress

My husband and me, we both love operas and ballet. Before we had the kids, we went to the opera house from time to time, mostly with some of our friends from Ireland who are living in Switzerland or came here regularly.

Mein Mann und ich, wir lieben beide Opern und Ballett. Bevor wir die Kinder hatten, besuchten wir gelegentlich mit unsern irischen Freunden, die entweder hier lebten oder regelmässig in die Schweiz zu Besuch kommen, Vorstellungen.

Some time ago, our friends gave me  an envelope full of vintage craft magazines they had found when their mother passed away, and there was also this lovely pattern.

Bei einem ihrer Besuche bekam ich von diesen Freunden einen Umschlag mit Vintage-Handarbeitsheften, die sie nach dem Tod ihrer Mutter gefunden hatten. Darunter war auch dieses bezaubernde Schnittmuster. 




Having sewn rather 1940s clothing recently, I wanted to make this typical 50s dress in a particular fabric I had in my stash for an opera event. As you can tell from the pattern pieces display, it's a fairly simple design and should be really "quick and easy", just as stated. So, perfect for a super quick project, as currently I don't have much time for sewing.

Nachdem ich in letzter Zeit eher Kleider im 1940er Stil genäht habe, wollte ich mal wieder ein typisches 50er Kleid machen,  in einem speziellen Stoff zu einem bestimmten Anlass. Wie man schon an der Schnittübersicht sieht, ist es ein ziemlich simples Design und sollte wirklich "schnell und leicht" zu realisieren sein, wie auf dem Umschlag angegeben - perfekt für meine ohnehin schon knapp bemessene Freizeit.

I decided on Wednesday morning to make this dress for the public opening event of the Zurich Opera House on Saturday, as my husband was going to perform with a choir of non-professional singers. After bringing the kids to school and came home, I spent one hour trying to find the fabric. Duh...

While the kids were having lunch, I cut the fabric. I had to do it on the floor, as the fabric was 6 yards long, and the pattern piece for the skirt was huge.

Am Mittwochmorgen beschloss ich zum Eröffnungsevent des Zürcher Opernhauses, wo auch mein Mann in einem "Laienchor" mitsingen würde, ein Kleid zu nähen. Nachdem ich die Kinder zur Schule gebracht hatte, suchte ich eine Stunde lang meinen Stoff. Bäh...

Während die Kinder zu Mittag assen, schnitt ich den Stoff zu. Ich musste das ohnehin am Boden machen, denn immerhin waren es 6 Yards Material, und auch das Muster für den Rock war enorm. 

Quick and easy. All too often this is not really the case, but this time, at 10 p.m. I had an almost finished dress, besides all the family and household duties. Almost finished means: only the skirt left to hem. Making a circle dress, you should know you have to let it hang for at least 24 hours because there are more stretchy parts cut on the bias - you have to allow the bias to "fall", otherwise your hem will be uneven.

Schnell und leicht. Allzu oft trifft das ja leider nicht wirklich zu, oder ich vermassle es durch einen Überlegungsfehler, aber um 10 Uhr abends hatte ich dann ein fast fertiges Kleid, nebst allen Familien- und Haushaltspflichten.  Will heissen: es ist nur noch der Rock zu säumen.  Das ist gut so, denn ein Tellerrock muss ja bekanntlich mindestens 24 Stunden hängen, damit sich die Rockteile, die schräg zum Fadenlauf sind und somit leicht dehnbar, strecken und ausgleichen. Ansonsten hat man einen unregelmässigen Saum. 

While my skirt was still hanging, I made a belt with a fabric-covered buckle. Just in case, if you ever find a vintage kit for a self-covered belt buckle, grab it! These are amazing! I was lucky and bought a huge lot some time ago. I sold most of them, and I tell you, they sold pretty fast. Of course I kept some of the buckles for myself, and I tell you, they are fantastic. Such a belt is just the cherry on top for your home-sewn dress! But for this project, I wanted a larger buckle, so I picked a used one where the fabric already came off. I took it apart, removed the old material and covered it with my new ballet shoes fabric. The buckle is a bit bent, but as it's larger, you can recognise the print also on the buckle, not only on the belt.

If you ever find some of these, grab them!

As I had enough fabric left, I made a reversivel bag for my vintage lucite purse frame. I even managed to make the matching handles for both colours of the bag. And I still had enough material for a circle dress for my girl.

Während nun also mein Rock hing und sich streckte, habe ich einen passenden Gürtel genäht - mit einer stoffbezogenen Schnalle. Falls Ihr mal diese alten Sets findet, mit denen man selber Gürtelschliessen mit Stoff bespannen kann, greift zu. Die sind nämlich toll! Glücklicherweise hatte ich mal ein ganzes Konvolut ergattert und grösstenteils verkauft - die gingen weg wie warme Semmeln. Natürlich habe ich einen Teil behalten, und ich liebe sie! Ein solcher Gurt ist einfach das Tüpfelchen auf dem "i" bei einem selbst gemachten Kleid.
In diesem Fall aber habe ich eine alte bereits benutze Schnalle genommen, demontiert, den alten zerfetzten Stoff entfernt und mit meinem neuen Material bespannt. Die Schliesse ist noch immer etwas verbogen, aber zum Glück ist sie gross genug, dass man auch auf ihr die Ballettschuhe erkennt - nicht nur auf dem Gürtel.

Und weil ich noch Stoff übrig hatte, machte ich noch einen wendbaren Beutel für meinen Vintage Lucite Taschengriff. Ich habe es sogar geschafft, dass es für jede Seite die farblich passenden Henkel gibt. Und ich hatte immer noch etwas Stoff, um meiner Tochter ebenfalls einen Tellerrock zu machen.

Unexpectedly we had decent weather that day. It was unusual for me to match my daughter's outfit, but she enjoyed it so much to look "like her mom", and she loves her circle dress.
As I mentioned, it was a public event, and people were not dressed nicely. I mean, people in general do not care much about their style, and dressing in Vintage style is a different matter, so I always differ from the crowd, but you could say we really popped out.  But it was a wonderful event, and my husband as his fellow choir members made an amazing performance.

And if you ever happen to be in Zurich, I highly recommend to visit the opera house, it's a beautiful historic building with lot's of amazing details.

Wir hatten etwas unerwartet gutes Wetter an dem Tag. Etwas ungewohnt war für mich, wie meine Tochter gekleidet zu sein, doch sie genoss es sehr, "wie Mami" auszusehen, und ihren Rock liebt sie nun ganz innig.
Wie erwähnt war es ein öffentlicher Anlass, und so war denn auch das Publikum nicht wirklich gut angezogen. Die Leute hier pflegen im Alltag nicht wirklich einen gediegenen Stil, und wenn man sich wie ich im Vintage-Stil kleidet, dann ist das ja nochmals eine andere Sache. Insofern hebe ich mich ohnehin schon etwas von der Masse ab, und an diesem Tag stach ich ebenso hervor. Doch es war ein ganz wunderbarer Anlass, und mein Mann und sein Chor haben eine ganz hervorragende Performance geboten.

Und falls Ihr je nach Zürich kommen solltet, lege ich Euch einen Besuch im Opernhaus nahe. Es ist ein sehr schönes historisches Gebäude mir ganz vielen hinreissenden Details.

Flamingo Swirl Sun Dress

Almost 2 years ago I joined a sew-along, and I made my first Swirl dress. Since then, I was hooked by the comfortable style, and I kept my eyes open for similar patterns. I found one from the 1940s, as well as a sun-dress version from the 1950s.

Vor fast 2 Jahren habe ich an einem Sew-Along für ein Swirl-Kleid teilgenommen. Seither bin ich diesem bequemen und doch kleidsamen Stil ein wenig verfallen, und ich halte meine Augen stets nach ähnlichen Schnitten offen. So fand ich bereits einen aus den 1940ern und einen für eine sommerliche Trägervariante aus den 50ern.

Some of you may know that I really, really love flamingos. It's often associated with tropical sceneries, but many people don't know that there is also a species, the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) native to Southern Europe. Since I have seen them on my holiday in the Camargue many years ago, I'm a bit in love with those birds. Totally understandable that I'm constantly keeping my eyes open for flamingo fabrics, but they shouldn't be too childish or too gaudy.  I recently found one with tiny flamingo birds on a navy background - the perfect material for a lovely summer dress.

Viele von Euch wissen vielleicht dass ich Flamingos liebe. Natürlich denkt man bei diesen Vögeln oft an tropische Länder, aber viele Leute wissen nicht, dass es auch eine im südlichen Europa beheimatete Spezies gibt. Seit einer Reise in die Camargue vor etlichen Jahren liebe ich Flamingos, und natürlich halte ich stets meine Augen nach entsprechenden Stoffen offen, die allerdings nicht zu kindisch oder schrill sein sollten. Kürzlich fand ich einen mit winzigen Flamingos auf navyblauem Grund - das war die perfekte Kombination zu meinem Sommerkleid.

It was such fun to make this dress. The instructions were - typical for those patterns - very basic, but just enough to follow easily. The sleeves and the neckline are finished with pink bindings, and the dress has hidden pink pockets in the side seams.

It was a far too hot summer (again, hello global warming), and I enjoyed wearing the breezy dress for the first time and got a lot of compliments from my friends. Wrap dresses are the best thing to wear on hot summer days, and my cotton fabric is from such a lovely quality it almost doesn't wrinkle.

Das Nähen hat wirklich Spass gemacht, der Schnitt war leicht umzusetzen, und die üblichen spärlichen Anleitungen genau ausreichend. Die Ärmel und den Ausschnitt habe ich mir rosa Schrägband verzaubert, und das Kleid hat versteckte Taschen in den Seitennähten.

Wir hatten ja wieder mal einen viel zu heissen Sommer (globale Erwärmung sei "Dank"...), und ich fühlte dennoch sehr wohl als ich das luftige Kleid zum ersten Mal trug. Ich hab auch viele nette Komplimente von unsern Freunden bekommen. Wickelkleider sind wirklich toll für solch heisse Tage, und das Material war von einer solch prima Qualität, dass es kaum geknittert hat.

I love to pair the dress with my pink Swedish clog sandals. Add a pink cardigan and you have the perfect outfit for many occasions. 
Somehow I forgot to make my husband take pictures on most occasions I was wearing this dress, so here are a few we took on the schoolyard today. I even found a true vintage silk souvenir scarf of Lake Garda in my drawer, a lovely destination I spent my holidays with my parents when I was much younger.  It added some holiday feeling to this hot September day and hid my awfully bad hair.

Sadly the dress turned out a tad too large. The neckline is slightly too wide, and the straps about half an inch too long. Well, if I ever find the time I could probably adjust the bodice.

Ich trage zum Kleid sehr gerne meine rosa Schwedenclogs.  Mit einem rosa Jäckchen ist man auch abends oder zu andern Gelegenheiten gut angezogen.
Irgendwie vergassen wir an jedem Tag, an dem ich das Kleid trug, Bilder zu machen. So musste ich das heute auf dem Schulhof nachholen. Ich fand sogar ein passendes altes Souvenir-Foulard aus Seide vom Garda-See, mit dem ich tolle Erinnerungen an einen Urlaub mit meinen Eltern in meiner Jugend verbinde. Es sorgte an diesem heissen Septembertag noch einmal für Ferienlaune - und versteckte mein heute total unbrauchbares Haar.

Leider ist das Oberteil einen Hauch zu weit, d.h. die Träger sind etwa einen Zentimeter zu lang und der Ausschnitt etwas weiter als erwartet. Vielleicht finde ich ja Zeit, das noch zu ändern. Ich bin sicher, dass das Kleid im kommenden Frühling wieder rausgeholt und dann sicher oft getragen werden wird.
