Frida's Garden - My Birthday Skirt

It is quite normal for me that I get behind my schedule and planned things remain UFOs for quite some time. And sometimes I am so surprised to finish projects in time, that I forget to blog about them, even though I announced them boastfully.

And today - tadaaa - voilà, my finished "Happy Belated Birthday To Myself" skirt. It's basically so belated, that it was finished one month after my birthday - 3 years ago. Frida Kahlo, the Mexican painter and her artwork, are pictured in this fabric. She lived from 1907 to 1954, and her birthday was, what a coincidence, on July 6th - exactly the day when my skirt was finished and worn for the first time out. But as tomorrow is my birthday, this is, once again, a birthday skirt.

For once I didn't want to make a simple pleated skirt, even though it would have been suitable for a folk art inspired fabric. But I didn't want a too bulk skirt, and then I found this pattern in my stash and thought it would look nice. It's a 1949 Simplicity pattern, 3033, it was still in fabric folds (exciting!) and it was quite easy to realise.

On my husband's advice I skipped the pockets. Today I wouldn't ask him, but back then I was still unsure weather it's yes or no to big pockets. Somehow I miss them, as I find myself all too often fiddling with the side seams in search of - obviously non-existing - pockets. Only trouble was - the construction of the waistband respectively the front pleats was somehow wrong. It was not possible at all to make it as described in the instruction sheet. I was wondering if I was too stupid to understand, if my English was not as good as I thought, if I just had misinterpreted something, but then I just realised that there certainly ARE patterns with errors or badly drawed, mismatching pieces. In the end, I just moved the front pleat folds and it worked.

There is also the pattern for the blouse included. I think the version with the huge collar would look nice made from a lightweight, white cotton fabric to be paired with the skirt.

I really love to wear this skirt, the colours are fantastic and great to add various solid tops. On these pictures I'm wearing a self made knit top. The pics are taken by my daughter.

Banned Apparel Cowgirl Border Skirt & Gertie's Wrap Top

I really dislike most reproduction labels, and I seldom came across a reproduced vintage style garment that offered a nice design, proper workmanship and good material quality. I do own a few (2 to be precise) items that stand out: a gorgeous "Fleur" dress I bought from Heyday , and a fabulous rayon dress from "The Seamstress of Bloomsbury". Sadly, these are exceptions. I think it's a tragedy that most of the reproduced vintage style garments are made of cheap quality material (polyester!), produced in Asia (under which conditions?), and still cost quite a lot. Then, all too often, seams are badly done, zips are not working or breaking after just a few days, or the cut of the design is so awful I wonder how they could put those garments on the models to make the stock pictures. As I sew, I would like a neat finish, because that's how I would like all my clothing to look like. When a dress that cost twice what I would pay for a true vintage fabric is made in an ugly way, I rather spend my rare spare time to make a dress of my own. And it still looks better and is unique.

Now you may think, "Oh no, not another blog with reviews about off-the-rack stuff". You're totally right. I am well aware that there are bloggers that earn their money by writing reviews, they certainly have a huge experience compared with me, but still, I wanted to show that there certainly are reproductions that are quite OK, even if I still prefer sewing my own stuff. So no worries - this is really an exception, and I only do it because the skirt in question has an issue I gladly could solve with my sewing skills.

So, why at all buy an off-the-rack retro garment when you can sew? Because the design of material is so amazing you just can't say no. When I first saw a picture of the Banned Apparel skirt on IG, I was hooked. I mean, it's a simple pleated full skirt. Nothing so special. But as some of you know, I love everything cowboys, deserts, cacti. Sadly, good reproduction fabrics with prints that have a mid-century vibe are not easy to find, and true vintage ones tend to be a tad too expensive for my purse. I decided to give that skirt a go and buy it. What could go wrong? If it was crab, I could re-sell it. Easy.

Was konnte schief gehen? So einfach.

But firstI only found pencil skirts made of this fabric. With the help of my lovely UK friend Melanie of Retropoodles, I found a seller in GB that was about to list exactly that skirt. (She searched the skirt, found the slim pencil version and called the shop to ask if they had the full skirt and would ship to Switzerland - honestly, how awesome is the lady? I didn't ask her to do all that, but she did. She's a gem! And have  look at her blog - she has the most amazing collection of vintage clothing and is always styled perfectly.) Except that it didn't look exactly like the skirt I had seen before on IG. The placing of the print was totally different and not as nice, as I particularly loved that blue sky around the hips. The IG version looked more like a vintage border print, as the busy part of the border was around the bottom of the skirt, while the top of the skirt was much calmer. But well, you can't have the cake and eat it. Really, what could go wrong? If it was crab, I could re-sell it. Easy.

So I ordered the skirt. (I made a mistake as was thinking in 1940s US sizes and the skirt turned out to be too wide. Duh. Note to myself: you're living in the 21st century.) But I could change that easily. Anyway, when it arrived I was positively surprised by the nice quality of the cotton fabric. It contains a tiny bit spandex, so the waistband may could forgive a bit. The material feels a bit like polished cotton, and it has a nice weight. Not too thin. This skirt could certainly also be worn on colder days with a chocolate brown jumper for example. The seams are more or less well made and neatly finished, even though the item is (sadly...) produced in China. And, best of all - it has pockets!

That's how the skirt look at its arrival.

On the not so positive side is the fact, that due to the design of the skirt with pockets, they cut the print apart and so there are 3 pieces and - obviously, 3 seams. Where the print does NOT match - "of course", I'd like to say, as it's made in China. A home-seamstress certainly would have tried her best to match the print. I don't expect a print to match in the back seam, as sometimes you don't even manage to do that when you make a border print skirt yourself. But there would have been a better way to make the pockets without cutting apart the whole border print. You could easily insert pockets by making a slash from the top only a few inches/centimeters down, which would not or at least not entirely affect the gorgeous print. I just guess it's faster and therefore cheaper to make it that way by joining 3 rectangular pieces. Of course, most people would not notice that there is only half a horse on each side of my skirt and some branches of a saguaro cactus that seem to float in the air. But I do, and some people I know certainly would as well.
Another detail that certainly will turn out to be a quality issue is the zip. It's a very cheap quality. I bought all kinds of zips, and this one reminds me painfully of the lesser ones. I'm totally expecting it to break on any occasion. Preferably when I'm in a hurry and have nothing else to wear. Haha.

Haha.

Close-up of he amazing border print.

Last but not least, this skirt is - short. If you're a small person or like a pinup-ish pseudo-retro style, probably with a petticoat showing from underneath the hem, you could live with a length of 60 centimeters or 23.5 inches. I'm 169 centimeters and love to wear shoes with heels and platforms, and the skirt looks too short on me. So I added solid trims in two different brown shades around the bottom to lengthen it by about 10 centimeters or 12 inches. The "hem" was basically non-existing, means: nothing (I mean NOTHING) to be left out. Looking again at the original stock photo and the length of the print, I am pretty sure there must have been some exceeding material at one point of production. Why on earth was it cut away?

Still, I love the skirt, as it's an amazing print, great colours, and the fabric as such is very nice. Fun thing is: the label says "Iron if necessary", and really, it wrinkles a bit too easily to say such a thing.

A very happy coincidence was, that I had a great cotton knit fabric in my stash that came pretty-pretty close to the blue of the sky in the print. So I sew quickly a wrap top. I had recently tried to design a wrap top myself, only to realize that it was pretty much the same like Gertie's Butterick 6285 pattern I already had in my stash as well. (Note to myself: organise your pattern collection.) When I say quickly, I really mean it. This pattern is made up, if you don't line it and you have no kids or pets distracting you, within an hour. So after my alteration of the skirt and my newly made wrap top I had a complete 50s style outfit. The colours perfectly matched my green and buttersotch vintage bakelite.
I wore it out yesterday (spring is here, and it's almost like summer, sunny and warm). Sadly I have some health issues currently and I have a sleep disorder, that's why I look very tired and wrinkled (and the bright midday sun was didn't help to hide it). "Iron if necessary", I'd like to say.

Notiz an mich: Schnittmuster endlich katalogisieren.)

1950s Ballet Shoes Dress

My husband and me, we both love operas and ballet. Before we had the kids, we went to the opera house from time to time, mostly with some of our friends from Ireland who are living in Switzerland or came here regularly.

Some time ago, our friends gave me  an envelope full of vintage craft magazines they had found when their mother passed away, and there was also this lovely pattern.

Having sewn rather 1940s clothing recently, I wanted to make this typical 50s dress in a particular fabric I had in my stash for an opera event. As you can tell from the pattern pieces display, it's a fairly simple design and should be really "quick and easy", just as stated. So, perfect for a super quick project, as currently I don't have much time for sewing.

I decided on Wednesday morning to make this dress for the public opening event of the Zurich Opera House on Saturday, as my husband was going to perform with a choir of non-professional singers. After bringing the kids to school and came home, I spent one hour trying to find the fabric. Duh...

While the kids were having lunch, I cut the fabric. I had to do it on the floor, as the fabric was 6 yards long, and the pattern piece for the skirt was huge.

Quick and easy. All too often this is not really the case, but this time, at 10 p.m. I had an almost finished dress, besides all the family and household duties. Almost finished means: only the skirt left to hem. Making a circle dress, you should know you have to let it hang for at least 24 hours because there are more stretchy parts cut on the bias - you have to allow the bias to "fall", otherwise your hem will be uneven.

While my skirt was still hanging, I made a belt with a fabric-covered buckle. Just in case, if you ever find a vintage kit for a self-covered belt buckle, grab it! These are amazing! I was lucky and bought a huge lot some time ago. I sold most of them, and I tell you, they sold pretty fast. Of course I kept some of the buckles for myself, and I tell you, they are fantastic. Such a belt is just the cherry on top for your home-sewn dress! But for this project, I wanted a larger buckle, so I picked a used one where the fabric already came off. I took it apart, removed the old material and covered it with my new ballet shoes fabric. The buckle is a bit bent, but as it's larger, you can recognise the print also on the buckle, not only on the belt.

If you ever find some of these, grab them!

As I had enough fabric left, I made a reversivel bag for my vintage lucite purse frame. I even managed to make the matching handles for both colours of the bag. And I still had enough material for a circle dress for my girl.

Unexpectedly we had decent weather that day. It was unusual for me to match my daughter's outfit, but she enjoyed it so much to look "like her mom", and she loves her circle dress.
As I mentioned, it was a public event, and people were not dressed nicely. I mean, people in general do not care much about their style, and dressing in Vintage style is a different matter, so I always differ from the crowd, but you could say we really popped out.  But it was a wonderful event, and my husband as his fellow choir members made an amazing performance.

And if you ever happen to be in Zurich, I highly recommend to visit the opera house, it's a beautiful historic building with lot's of amazing details.

The Gardening Dress That Turned Out As A Skirt

Maybe you have a big passion like me you like to show with themed prints. For me, it's gardening. (And some more...)  Recently I found an amazing vintage border print with gardening tools. I totally had to have it. It arrived a bit later than expected, but I had made pattern plans ahead.
But as so often, life sometimes takes a different course.

First, I wanted to make a warp dress with a solid bodice. But I couldn't find a matching one, and the border fabric was too precious to me to "taint" it with a not perfectly  matching solid. So, then it was going to be a skirt. Again. Better for border prints anyway.

I was not so positive about "stuffing" 3 entire yards into a skirt. I'm currently not happy with my figure. My health issues during the past months are showing up with several extra kilos. Very full skirts make me look like a frigate in full sails. I found a nice 40s pattern with a slimmer shape for sale on Etsy (no, I didn't buy it!)  that could help as a guideline for my own skirt.

But is it allowed to cut such a gorgeous border fabric piece apart? A sacrilege? What could I do with the remaining scrap? After measuring and calculating a bit, I saw I had enough left to make a top later.

Last but not least, my backbone turned out to be the most evil spanner in the works. Since several weeks, a shifted lumbar vertebra causes me incredible pains. Don't ask me how it happened, I don't know. Too much garden work? Slightly ironic. However, I had planned to finish the skirt and the top for my upcoming birthday. But then I ruined my back. Totally. During a crafting project with small kids I had to stoop down too often. Too much for my already damaged backbone. Several days I was more or less knocked-out with pains and totally unable to do anything useful.

But once I get something into my head, I really have to do it, no matter how. Typical Bernese pig-head. And be it only the skirt, I had to have it for my birthday.
The biggest happiness is spending time with my family and friends that day. But I also love to spoil myself, to  give myself a small treat. And as much as I love to sew a new garment for Christmas, a new dress or skirt for my birthday is a nice tradition.

My husband has a talent to take pictures of me in less flattering poses... And it was very windy!

I added some black ric-rac trim at the bottom, I think it's a nice detail picking up the printed chevron line of the border. Still planned is a summery top made from the rest of the border print, and a matching belt.

Luckily I finished the skirt in time. A very short walk away from our home there's a colourful fallow field in full bloom. Poppies, white camion and cornflowers make an enormous mostly red carpet of flowers! We walked there spontaneously, therefore my tatty appearance. As it was rather cool (June so far was rainy and cold), I had to put on my denim jacket, it looks a bit weird.

I really love my new skirt, and it's definitely suitable for a passionate gardener like me. I hope I can show you more pictures once I've made the matching top for my dress!

My daughter. And yes, I love living on the countryside.

Harwood Steiger "Desert Race" Skirt

Some of you may know I have a soft spot not only for Mexican circle skirts, but generally for many things from the Southwest. I had the incredible chance to travel there many years ago, and I was deeply impressed by the landscape and the rich culture. I always, since I was a little girl, had a deep interest for Native American culture, and there was a time I spent what little money I had on silver and turquoise jewellery.

When I became a vintage sewer I was looking for Southwestern themed vintage fabrics some time ago, I came across the name and work of Harwood Steiger. However, I mostly found table cloths and runners. Or rather 60s and 70s skirts. I was sure there had to be material in dress making quality out there.

Then I found by chance a wonderful dark red /maroon fabric printed with cacti and roadrunners - just what I was looking for! It was slightly over 3 yards, the colour would look great with my Southwestern jewelry, and it was - surprisingly affordable. I couldn't believe my luck! I was a bit disappointed as the print is dark blue, not back as I had hoped for (and as it was described in the listing). Still, it's a piece of art and I am very proud to own it.

I first played around with several types of pleats. None seem to suit the rather wide border print. I didn't want the gorgeous design to disappear to much in the pleats. In the end I decided to make rather deep pleats, leaving the front part unpleated.

Roadrunner race!

It was our anniversary yesterday, and my husband had planned to go to a nice place for dinner. We know each other since 15 years and are married now 7 years, so he knows exactly that I love to wear something new and special for a special occasion. He had seen me fiddling around with the fabric and some pins shortly before midday, and he asked if I wanted to wear this skirt for dinner. I said, well, I thought I could finish it, but actually I was unsure. He encouraged me to go ahead (yes, sure, go and sew up this skirt quickly), and I actually was surprised I succeeded. Pinning all the pleats all over again, inserting the zipper, adding the waistband... Including preparing the kids and myself. In time.

Rechtzeitig.

The food and the evening was wonderful, we had a beautiful flower wrath on the table my husband had organized (oh well, he's a romantic Italian...), we could sit outside and enjoy one of those mild late summer evenings. We forgot to take proper pictures, so we had to do so today.
I love to wear some of my turquoise and coral jewellery with this skirt. It suits the beautiful Southwestern theme of print. I even have a vintage and slightly broken roadrunner brooch.

Flamingo Border Skirt

Recently someone told me that apparently I love skirts. Well, I love dresses too, but with two little ones separates are more comfortable and easier to care for than dresses. As I love flamingos and summer was exceptionally hot here in Switzerland, I decided to make one more skirt for my wardrobe and bought this lovely material. (Thus the skirt doesn't count for my pattern pledge as the fabric was not part of my stash and I didn't use a particular pattern.)

This project wasn't challenging at all, but the fabric is great. So I decided to show the skirt here on my blog just the same. You don't find many nice border prints today that are nor totally childish (mind you, I sometimes DO wear really childish stuff) or kitschy.
When I ordered it I thought I would make a very full skirt, but as I'm more into the 40s stuff currently, I decided to make it less full. So it's a "late 1940s full skirt". I even have enough fabric left to make a halter top for me later and a full skirt for my little girl as well - as we both adore flamingos!

I love this print, the sketchy style looks rather mid-century...

...and the quality is very nice, as usual with these fabrics.

A gathered or pleated fill skirt is easy to make. There are plenty of great tutorials online, and you don't need a pattern. Personally, I prefer pleats, as they look less bulky (important when you are not very slim...) and are easier to iron.

Flamingos in the Swiss Alps! (me and friends in Poschiavo during my holidays)

And I forgot my pink purse!

I was wearing this skirt for the first time on our holiday in the mountains. Believe me, there's nothing else that looks as misplaced as flamingos in the Swiss Alps. I got a lot of strange looks, but I totally enjoyed wearing the skirt. The mint and pink colours look fresh and breezy, and I was lucky I found just shortly before our holiday an off-the-rack peasant blouse in exactly the same colour (and on sale...).
I also made this pink knit top in a peasant style, it matches the colour of the flamingos perfectly and is very comfortable to wear. (The pattern for the top is designed by myself and has to be adjusted a bit yet.)

It's Summer!

The past two weeks we had incredibly high temperatures in Switzerland. I don't remember such  heatwave. It's not only hot, it's also humid. It was usually around 35° C or 95° F. And mind you, people normally have no air condition in their homes, as it is that hot by way of exception. At least we can't complain about bad weather and a rainy summer so far.

Yes, it's summer indeed - silly me, as usual... :-)
But what do you wear? Summer is about bright colours, flowers and fruits, lightweight cotton fabrics. Scouring my wardrobe for something to wear, I suddenly remembered a fabric I once bought - 15 years ago. I originally had planned to make a tablecloth, and I also had a coordinate fabric to make placemats. I found the fabric. As - you are right - I never made that tablecloth nor the matching placemats. Sometimes it's good to be a fabric hoarder.

Doch was anziehen?

The material is not at all what you expect from a tablecloth, not quite medium weight cotton, densely woven, printed with sky blue stripes, apricots and cherries.

I already used this pattern - Simplicity 2158 - for a dress (not quite finished yet) and a wrap skirt (will blog about it later). I love the rather plain back skirt that has the 40s A-line, but the gathered front that adds some width. As I wanted to have a skirt with  button placket, and as I didn't have quite enough material (remember? it was intended to make placements, not a skirt...), I altered the pattern. As I don't like gathers on skirts too much, I made some small pleats.

I had to patch the material for the button placket and the waist band - there was not enough material. But you really have to look extremely hard to see the seams where the pieces meet. It was a rather quick project and I'm more or less pleased with it. It's a really breezy skirt.

In the end I chose blue buttons, as I had these rather big vintage beauties in my stash. I'm totally in love with them!

It was a hot day again today. Not quite as hot as the first half of the week, but still... But it was slightly windy, so the heat was bearable. However, my hair looks fuzzy because of the wind, and the skirt is full of creases (I was sitting in the car for half an hour...) so don't look too closely.

Somehow the skirt makes me feel like cooking jams. Apricots or cherries?

Irgendwie macht der Rock Lust auf Marmelade-Kochen. Aprikose oder Kirsche?
