About espadrilles...

Today  bought a pair of espadrilles. You certainly know the mostly cheap flat fabric shoes with kind of raffia soles? They used to be quite fashionable in the 80s, and I used to wear them a lot as a teen. I mean, you couldn't wear them long, as soon as they got wet they had to be thrown away.

I learned some time ago that espadrilles were en vogue already during the 40s and 50s. I didn't know this before as for me they were so typical 80s.

Traditionally worn by Spanish fishermen, they soon became a popular staple for casual summer outfits, for many summer activities. (As a teen, I always though they were a Chinese invention as they usually were made in China. And very cheap, bad quality.)

Flirting...
I thought it would be fun to show you a few pictures from the past with famous and non-famous people wearing espadrilles.

In my youth they were worn by girls only. At least in Switzerland. My Italian husband told me he wore them too. So it was maybe a cultural issue.
But then, look at the pics. Celebrities like Gary Cooper, John Wayne, and Humphrey Bogart, some of Hollywood's most famous actors, wore them in their holidays. They rock!

Spanish painter Salvador Dalí kind of had to wear this traditional Spanish footwear.

Of course, there always existed varieties of shapes and designs. Espadrille wedges seemed to be a favorite of the ladies back then, and still are today.

Hope you had fun. I don't know how you feel, but after I had learned that those rather "cheap" shoes had a certain place in fashion history, I will never look at them the same way.

Hoffentlich hattet Ihr Spass.

Edit: My wonderful vintage sewing friend Couturette wrote a great tutorial about making your own lined espadrilles with a ready-made sole. Check it out! (Aug 6th 2015)

Guest Post for Sew Retro Rose

It was a huge pleasure and honour to write a guest post for one of my favourite bloggers, lovely and inspiring Beccie of Sew Retro Rose.

I surely can't compete with her sewing skills, but I was happy I could help her by writing about one of my passions: vintage costume jewelry from Doris's Jewellery Box.

There are (mostly will be) many more guest posts of some wonderful ladies, and if you don't know Beccie's blog by now, be sure to follow her. Her vintage style sewing ranges from the 1950s back into the 1930s.

What I was wearing... Mexican Repro Circle Skirt

I recently was looking for a Mexican circle skirt. Most of them are not affordable for me, and all too often not my size. I was rather surprised when I found on Ebay some skirts that looked very much the same, but appeared to be reproductions. And best of all, the were not expensive at all. Almost too cheap to be true. I was not sure, but I had a look at the producers homepage, and so I decided to make my offers to the seller and they were luckily accepted. So in addition to a true vintage skirt in the same style from the 50s, I now own two cute reproductions that totally fit me. (The vintage skirt was not correctly measured, so it was too small and needed some adjustments.)

Yesterday was very hot weather (33°C or almost 92°F) rather unusual for Switzerland, but it was a wonderful day. As life for our family has been a bit difficult recently, it was the perfect opportunity to take one of those beauties out. We went to the Rhinefalls, Europe's largest waterfalls. We had a great time with the kids, despite the many tourist there. And of course my skirt was rather eye-catching (maybe too flamboyant, hehe...).

I didn't wear a petticoat (I seldom do, it makes me feel "puffy"), it would have been too hot anyway.
Please excuse the sloppy carmen top, it's one of my oldest and will soon be replaced.

The skirts I bought - the label is Monica, Paris, and the prints are even signed - both are well-made, neatly sewn and hemmed (which often is not the case with circle skirts), but there are always a few sequins falling off. The fabric quality is almost the same as the one of my original Mexican circle skirt from the 1950s. The embroidery is rather abundant in some places, for me very unusual as I normally don't wear much bling-bling, but it's totally convenient for the style. The print is rich and vibrant and has an authentic look.

I washed it with the laundry program for woolens to treat the skirt as gently as possible and put it in a pillow cover, so the few sequins that had fallen off could be recovered and replaced.

I love the print very much, there are cacti, a tavern, a dancing couple, musicians and even a dog. "Mexico Lindo", pretty mexico - true.
