Harwood Steiger "Desert Race" Skirt

Some of you may know I have a soft spot not only for Mexican circle skirts, but generally for many things from the Southwest. I had the incredible chance to travel there many years ago, and I was deeply impressed by the landscape and the rich culture. I always, since I was a little girl, had a deep interest for Native American culture, and there was a time I spent what little money I had on silver and turquoise jewellery.

When I became a vintage sewer I was looking for Southwestern themed vintage fabrics some time ago, I came across the name and work of Harwood Steiger. However, I mostly found table cloths and runners. Or rather 60s and 70s skirts. I was sure there had to be material in dress making quality out there.

Then I found by chance a wonderful dark red /maroon fabric printed with cacti and roadrunners - just what I was looking for! It was slightly over 3 yards, the colour would look great with my Southwestern jewelry, and it was - surprisingly affordable. I couldn't believe my luck! I was a bit disappointed as the print is dark blue, not back as I had hoped for (and as it was described in the listing). Still, it's a piece of art and I am very proud to own it.

I first played around with several types of pleats. None seem to suit the rather wide border print. I didn't want the gorgeous design to disappear to much in the pleats. In the end I decided to make rather deep pleats, leaving the front part unpleated.

Roadrunner race!

It was our anniversary yesterday, and my husband had planned to go to a nice place for dinner. We know each other since 15 years and are married now 7 years, so he knows exactly that I love to wear something new and special for a special occasion. He had seen me fiddling around with the fabric and some pins shortly before midday, and he asked if I wanted to wear this skirt for dinner. I said, well, I thought I could finish it, but actually I was unsure. He encouraged me to go ahead (yes, sure, go and sew up this skirt quickly), and I actually was surprised I succeeded. Pinning all the pleats all over again, inserting the zipper, adding the waistband... Including preparing the kids and myself. In time.

Rechtzeitig.

The food and the evening was wonderful, we had a beautiful flower wrath on the table my husband had organized (oh well, he's a romantic Italian...), we could sit outside and enjoy one of those mild late summer evenings. We forgot to take proper pictures, so we had to do so today.
I love to wear some of my turquoise and coral jewellery with this skirt. It suits the beautiful Southwestern theme of print. I even have a vintage and slightly broken roadrunner brooch.

    1. I was very nervous about finding the right way to use this fabric, and I am happy how it turned out. The fabric end was cut badly and I had to chop off that bit of the wonderful border print, which is really not an easy thing to do. I plan to use the scrap for a matching top trim or a small purse.
      Thanks for your good wishes!

  3. It's so fabulous!!! I love that it's exciting and bold, but but still very wearable and easy to dress up and down. What a terrific piece!

Happiest anniversary wishes to you both!!!

    1. Dear Jessica, thank you so much for your wishes and your kind words.

Yes, I absolutely agree, it's a bold print. In my country people are absolutely not used to such kind of materials, and I know wearing this skirt I will stand out of the crowd even more. I guess the only person in Switzerland who has ever heard about Harwood Steiger is my husband, as I kept telling him for hours and hours about my special find. :-)
I'm really in love with the fabulous mid-century style of the design. Still, it's a timeless piece and I'm pretty sure it will be a great wardrobe staple for many years.

      Happy regards, Doris
