Wearing True Vintage: 1940s Embroidered Apron

Christmas preparations are in full swing, and I would like to sew a Christmas dress for me this year, so this is just a very short post about one of my recent Vintage acquisitions I was wearing for the first time last Saturday.

I bought this wonderful 1940s apron from a Vintage group on FB from the wonderful and lovely Taylor Maid. She is what I would call a treasure hunter. She always has a wide range of all kind of garments and accessories she offers to her fellow vintage loving girls. When I saw the apron for the first time, I immediately fell in love, even though the embroidery had some yellow in it. (I always feel uncomfortable with that colour, no idea why.)

Anyway, it took some time to decide weather I wanted to have the apron or not. But it was still in very good condition considering it's age, with only some minor issues. You could say the apron was not worn often.

I feel very feminine when I put it on. Most modern aprons are not half as flattering as vintage ones, as these often have darts and are fitted for female shapes.

I love the sweetheart-neckline and the set-in stripes of brown fabric running down the entire apron, they're very figure-friendly. And look at the embroidery! Well, I mean, I could do that actually, but it would take me ages. Even if the apron is not home-made, but a manufactural item, it's far more beautiful than commercial stuff rom today, and the details, material, and work are terrifically beautiful, after so many decades.

I have some vintage apron patterns at home, and I decided to make some more lovely aprons. Especially when you have guests, it's a lovely staple to wear. You don't ruin your outfit and look still lovely!

This is pretty much the same pattern as my apron!

Don't look at the bad pictures and my tense expression, we had guests and it was a bit embarrassing to pose for pictures. (Well, it always is, for me.)

Just a side-note: the lasagne was made by my husband and my lovely daughter. It was delicious! I just posed with it and put it in the oven.

Do you wear vintage or vintage style aprons or house dresses too? Don't you think that doing housework is a bit less a struggle when you feel nice and attractive?

  2. You are a vision of domestic loveliness, dear Doris. It's beautiful that many of us in the vintage community still wear classic aprons like this. It would be a true shame if a centuries old garment fell out of everyday use entirely in the 21st century (at least outside of restaurants and factories).

That lasagna looks really good! As Tony is Italian, we often have a homemade Italian feast on Christmas Eve and then a traditional North American Christmas dinner the following day. Lots of cooking and baking - just as I love things to be this time of year! :)

Big hugs & tons of merry Christmas wishes to you and your family,
    ♥ Jessica

*PS* Thank you very much for your splendidly nice comment on this week's vintage outfit blog. (Isn't Diva the best burgundy lippy ever? I haven't used any others since discovering it a few years ago.)

    1. Jessica, seeing this comment unfortunately only now (shame on me) I still want to thank you for your kind words you leave so often on my blog.

Christmas is the time of year we spend a lot time baking and cooking, for ourselves, family and fiends. I think it's a goof way to spend time with loved ones, and children are so eager to help and learn (at their age, at least). And I'm blessed to have an Italian husband who really LOVES cooking - and eating.

Best regards and yes, I do look forward to all those delicious meals - Doria
