A 1950's Maternity Christmas Dress

I totally wanted to have a proper Christmas outfit this year. Since more than a year I have a gorgeous true vintage Santa fabric in my stash. I was inspired to make a skirt like the one Beccie from Sew Retro Rose showed in her post some time ago, but I wanted to figure out a different way of arranging the Santas, as I had more yardage than she had, and I wanted to use them without cutting away too much fabric. (Beccie makes the most amazing Christmas dresses, read also here and here and here and here!)

A splendid 1950s Santa border print - 3 yards!

This year I lost 10 kilos so far, but I recently I gained a little bit weight again, as it's the time of year when there's a lot of yummie chocolate everywhere… Ah, another addiction, However, we all tend to eat too much on Christmas. Don't you do the same? All the wonderful dishes, and being together with loved-ones you easily tend to forget to eat less.

So I thought it would be nice to have a dress for Christmas that is a bit forgiving, just in case. Should I make another swirl dress? Would have been a clever thing to do, as I knew he pattern. But then, I need slightly longer sleeves (it's winter, after all!). And I have so many patterns I would like to make, it would feel like committing a crime using the same pattern twice.

So I scoured my collection for the perfect pattern. I didn't look at my collection of Lutterloh's and fashion magazines, as I didn't want to draw patterns to save time. I was thinking about kimono sleeves (no sleeves to set in), and it should be a quick and easy project. And it should be in about my size, so I wouldn't have to bother with too many alterations. However, even though I love kimono sleeves, I sadly realised I had only one or two patterns featuring them. Argh… Next time when I go for pattern hunt I will pay attention to that detail…

In meiner Grösse (ohne zeitraubende Änderungen).
Ich wollte eigentlich Kimono-Ärmel. Keine Ärmel einsetzen. Spart Zeit.

However, I found another one. It was NOT my exactly size, but it was - a maternity dress! No, I'm not pregnant, but the width of the dress is adjustable in the back, so this would be the perfect dress for overeating opulent meals.
It's a Butterick pattern, 6195, an Australian issue (and no coloured illustration on the envelope!). I didn't find any information about it but it's certainly from the first half of the 1950s.

I was looking for quite some time to find a nice fabric. Suitable for Christmas, however, not too gaudy. There are so many possibilities. In the end, I found this wonderful material here. There are shades of green, there's some brown in it, even a tiny bit of teal. And oh, yes, the red berries that will allow to match lots of red accessories with the dress.

Please ignore the kids' toys on the floor… :-)

I went for the longer sleeves that require some darts. Not too long, not short, and I still could wear a cardigan with the dress.
The pattern doesn't have any pockets, but as I have overcome my fear of pockets only recently, I was thinking about adding some. However, I was not sure how it would look like with the soft pleats in the front, so I maybe will add pockets later.
For the facing of the collar, I used an old shirt of my husband, I thought it would be nice to have the white facing showing a bit.
I replaced the gathered part on the shoulder with tiny pleats, as the gathering didn't look nice first.

I tried the bodice on with the skirt panels pinned to it to check the length, however, I still feel the bodice is slightly too long. Maybe I just wasn't standing there properly when posing for the pics, but it looks baggier than it is. Well, it really was late...

I used brown buttons as they "melted" better with the entire fabric. I prefer to add red accents with accessories.

Instead of making a tie belt I used one of my vintage belt buckles to make a proper fabric belt. In the back, there is a casing with draw-strings to adjust the width of the dress, which is a clever idea. I cut the skirt slightly longer, so the dress is a tea-length.

I'm wearing true vintage shoes from the late 1940s I bought from a FB group, they were new old stock and in splendid shape. They're totally amazing! It's very rare to find vintage shoes in my size. In good condition. And affordable. What a lucky find!
And I made the felt poinsettia hair accessory and a brooch. (I made a hair ring for my daughter too, as she constantly is stealing my stuff away from me…)

When I looked in the mirror the first time wearing my finished dress I got the giggles and had to think of Bridget Jones when appears wearing that incredibly ugly costume her mother bought and she  said: "Great. I was wearing a carpet." I can say: "Great. I'm wearing a tablecloth." My husband said I'm looking like Mrs. Elf. He always tries to be nice.

What are you going to wear on Christmas?

Und was tragt Ihr so an Weihnachten?

I joined the "Share In Style" with my Christmas outfit and would like to invite you to have a look at the others' contributions in Rosy's post.

  9. Giggles. You should have seen me blazing through this post trying to figure out where Auntie Siobhan missed that Mrs. Buttons is expecting. Girl, ya pert near gave me a heart attack.

Well, guess I won't be a cyber auntie any time soon. But, the dress is nice and you look vintagey stunning, sexy, smart in it too.

    1. Lyric, noooo, no kids anymore. We're happy to have our 2 little brats, love them so much, but have to be reasonable. :-) I would have loved to have lots of swirly crazy cyber aunties like you, and you can be sure you girls would have been the first to know if there was another child on the way.

I wish you merry Christmas, all the best to you, and a healthy and prosperous new year. We certainly will be in touch throughout the next SAL with Beccie!

    1. Thank you! The hair accessory is made of felt cuts I bought from a crafter on Etsy that is specialised in those, some time ago, and I was happy to have them in my stash as I had so little time left. In the meantime I also added some Czech glass beads for some sparkling accents. :-)

  11. Really nice job on the dress! Fabric is just perfect for the season. I also love those button and buckle sets they used to make in old times.
I wore vintage tartan skirt with black jersey top and 40's style cardigan, now I'm wearing my pj's ;)
    Merry Christmas to you too!

    1. Thanks Rhia! The button and buckle sets are a great vintage find, but in the end I used the other buckle and some vintage buttons that didn't belong together but had exactly the same color. (It's the one on the bottom of the pic.) I have a soft spot for vintage buttons…

Unfortunately I don't own a vintage tartan skirt, but I have 2 "modern" tartan skirts (but they never go out of style, do they?) and a small men's kilt that is actually very heavy.

Hope you had a cozy Christmas in your pj's!

  13. Sweet Doris, you are the picture of mid-century wintertime loveliness. This dress is such a vision! It exudes the spirit, warmth, and gaiety of the season and fits you like a stylish glove. I honestly wish it were available from a repro brand so that I could tuck away my pennies and purchase one of my own. As always, your vintage style inspires and delights me, dear lady.

Huge hugs, many sincere thanks for your wonderful blog comment yesterday, and countless happy New Year's wishes!

    1. Dear Jessica, I was so delighted to find your wonderful comment. I'm happy there are people reading my posts, liking what I'm doing (even if it's not much compared to there sewers), as vintage sewing in my country is an awfully lonesome affair. I am still very happy how the dress turned out, looking festive bur not too gaudy. It's totally what I wanted. I wish I had more time and was a better sewer, would love to make custom dresses for people who love to own OOAK pieces…

I recently saw that http://www.heydayonline.co.uk has a Christmas version of the Fleur dress I liked too, as it was festive without being exaggeratedly Christmas-y. So I think for next year I will go for a small-scaled Christmas print fabric.

Best wishes again to you too, stay well, Doris
