Victory Day Blouse

I need more separates, blouses, shirts, trousers, skirts, and when I saw this material I knew it was perfect for a blouse that would match my aeroplane brooch. It even has a bit the look of some feedsack fabric prints from the 1940s.
It was a inexpensive Michael Miller fabric with stylised parasols, but I realised it only later. The print reminded me of rotating propellers, and the blue stripes look a little bit like the famous "V". My blouse was finished today, so it's my Victory Day blouse.

I chose a  Hollywood pattern, 1162, from 1943. Even the envelopes look fantastic, as they featured film and music stars of those times. On my pattern there's Maureen O'Hara, which I admire a lot. Mainly because of her red hair and her performance alongside John Wayne in "The Quite Man". And she's still alive.

The pattern is for a skirt jumper and blouse. The blouse has an interesting design, as there's no front yoke as such, but it's basically the elongated back shoulder on each side. The gathers and darts provide enough width for bust and - very important for me - the shoulders. I have wide shoulders and want my blouses to be comfortable.
I made the sleeves a bit wider, so they look puffier than on the pattern. The buttons were a freebee from an Etsy seller. I'm not sure if I should change them. At midnight they looked perfect, but in full daylight they look a wee bit cram coloured, not white. As they are vintage I hope they will look different after washing.

Please excuse the somehow blurry pictures... They were taken by my 6 year old daughter with my phone, and the quality is really poor, but she was happy to help and had great fun.

The aeroplane brooch is made by me from vintage parts I found when I was looking for some jewellery components. I bought a huge lot of them and even had to buy more later as I made many such brooches for like-minded women.
My own piece features three vintage Czech rhinestone hearts in patriotic colours. The propellers of the brooch rotate, so I think the print is perfect for the aeroplane.

One day I have to learn how to photoshop away a fat bum and wrinkles... ;-)

My other brooch is a vintage "Victory brooch" that I bought some time ago on Ebay. The letter even shows the Morse code for V - V for victory was a common saying and such brooches a common sight during WW2.

Sadly Victory Day is not commemorated in my country. This year there's a lot written in the newspapers as it's the 70th anniversary. Of course Switzerland was not "involved" in war as such, but I think we should remember those years nonetheless. Even though we were spared from major losses, many people here had to make sacrifices, and it was a hard time. The more we should remember those who suffered so much more than we.

  2. What a lovely blouse! I have been searching high and low for some "patriotic" fabric (red, white and blue) for ages, but haven't had any luck. I am surely going to try look for this :) I love the Hollywood patterns too! I have only one, and haven't made it up yet, but I think it's time soon.

    1. I love that color combination so much, but it's incredibly difficult to find a fabric which is not too obviously "patriotic (so no stars and stripes). Try to find a nautical print, they have the same colors quite often.

      Best, Doris

  3. Your blouse looks wonderful! I really like the print. And your pins! I think I remember seeing the red victory pin on ebay, I believe there was a blue one too. There were some VE Day events here in the U.S. but nothing in my area. I celebrated by wearing red, white and blue to work on Friday with one of my own victory pins. :)

    1. Emily, thanks for your kind words. I originally wanted to by a V brooch with a locket for a photograph, but I missed the auctioned was very disappointed. These items are quite searched after, and often very expensive. So I was lucky for once.
As I said, I love to wear those colours very much, even without any particular occasion. I would love to see your VE Day outfit though. :-)

  5. Sweet Doris, you always look amazing and create the most covetable, classic, beautiful garments. This blouse is no exception and it has me swooning up a storm (and wishing you had a repro line of your own! :)). Your WW2 brooches are spectacular! I have a small collection of Victory and sweetheart jewelry, too, and am on always on the prowl for me, especially pieces pertaining to my own country of Canada (but I love it all, no matter where it hails from).

Big hugs & tons of happy May wishes!

    1. Thank you Jessica for your kind words. Getting a compliment from an experienced vintage girl like you is always compensating for the "loneliness" I experience as a vintage wearer in my region.

Maybe I should have created a red and white plane brooch for Canadian vintage lovers. Besides that, my country's colors are the same...

Best wishes to you to beautiful BC!
